April Waller is an outstanding singer. She mostly sings country songs but uses her voice like a masterful violinist uses a Stradivarius. I had the good fortune to play bass in her band several years ago and will still sit in on occasion if she is in town and needs a bassist.
Last year we were messing around in the studio and came up with some quirky ideas. Synth bass sounds, drum patches, weird risers, audio clips from old movies, and other gadgetry. Those ideas started building on each other until we had a catchy and retro sounding dance song. Not really our forte but a good song is a good song.
I stumbled on the lyric “Slow Hand Clap” as a chorus and built the rest of the song around that. The melody wound up sounding like something Banarama would sing. We tried doubling Shari Lynn’s vocals but it was still missing the vibe that you get when several people sing together.
April was gracious and agreed to help us out with the song. She and Shari were very encouraging to each other during the session, providing helpful suggestions and feedback. The end result is fun and quirky throw back to the days when girls had big hair and MTV played music videos.
Slow Hand Clap will be released on February 28, 2024. You can pre-save the song here
