Who Told You is the latest banger from Captain Billy’s. It features some catchy hooks, funky beats, and interesting lyrics. It might be our best release to date. One of those songs I don’t get tired of listening to, even after writing, recording, and mixing it.

If you are in a relationship where you put in more than the other person or they are simply taking advantage of your good nature, do you bear some responsibility for staying in that asymetrical relationship? And when is the right time to walk away?

A friend recently asked how I write songs, do I write lyrics and make the music to fit them, or write music and add lyrics to fit? The truth is I do both. This one started with the guitar riff and opening chord progression and the rest of the arrangement fell into place fairly quickly. If I get a good musical idea I like to keep riffing on it and start scatting lyrics until something interesting comes out. What came out was the opening line of the first verse. That started the story arc for the rest of the song. The chorus was a natural outgrowth of the story, although we went through many revisions for all the lyrics before we were happy with the results.

I really like the bridge in this song. It gives a rhythmic break in the track and is interesting harmonically. The line “It’s a testament” came to me while I was drifting off to sleep. I like the percussive sound of the word and it generates unique imagery to my mind. And it helps provide resolution to the story as the protagonist realizes they aren’t being heard or respected and have to walk away.

Today is release day for Who Told You. Give it a spin on your favorite streaming platform. It is well worth investing 3 minutes of your time and just might make your life better.
